Pride and Humility

Everybody, Somebody and Nobody – Everybody wants to be Somebody, but Nobody wants to be Nobody.  Have you ever felt like Nobody= unknown, insignificant, marginal, underling or ordinary?  Oftentimes we allow the ‘perceived’ superiority of others to creep into our emotional feelings and give them power; a negative force that gives us the feeling of inferiority in our interaction with family, friends and co-workers.

People that are prideful are arrogant, egotistical, conceited and vain.  They give self-importance to their outward self – appearance and behavior.  These days it appears to be more prevalent in the workforce, perhaps driven by the corporate mindset of ‘attracting and retaining the brightest and best’.  This implies to some that they have more value (experience and knowledge) and are highly rewarded with mediocre performance.  In reality, EVERYBODY has value, regardless of race, gender or age.

The scriptures tell us in Proverbs 16:17-18 that “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall”.  Anyone who is full of themselves and lacking in humility will soon find themselves torn down in some manner.  This scripture points out the consequences of being overly confident and haughty in nature.

Humility or self-effacement, is the freedom from thinking of yourself at all.  Your first consideration is the rights of others before your own feelings and the feelings of others before your own rights (John R. Wooden).    This implies living the Golden Rule, or ethic of reciprocity, that one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.  We should strive to bestow gentleness, patience and respect upon EVERYBODY that crosses our paths.  They are SOMEBODY that can impact your life and challenge you to grow into the person YOU were created to become, if your self-worth (ego) will just step aside and allow your soul to be nurtured.

First Day of Spring 2014: Vernal Equinox

Alas it is SPRING!!!  The day the earth feels a rebirth with increasing daylight and warming temperatures.  The word equinox is derived from Latin words meaning “equal night.”  Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the Sun rises and sets due east and west.
 At the equinoxes, the tilt of the Earth relative to the Sun is zero, which means that the Earth’s axis neither points toward nor away from the Sun.

The vernal, or spring, equinox is a signal to nature to begin renewal – thus the emergence of worms from the earth, ladybugs on screen doors, appearance of green buds, chirping birds and blooming flowers!!!

Open up the windows of your house to let in the sounds of spring, and open up the window of your soul to let in the warmth!!!  Be renewed and uplifted by the beauty in and around you <3

Irish Blessing

St. Patrick's Day is an enchanted time - of winter being transformed into spring.  This is a cultural and religious holiday observed by Irish people and the Catholic Church.  The day commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.  Green ribbons and shamrocks have been worn to celebrate St. Patrick's Day dating back as early as the 17th century.  It is believed that Saint Patrick used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the then pagan Irish.

May your blessings outnumber
The shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.
~Irish Blessing
Some enjoyable Irish traditions:
Irish Coffee - 1 cup hot strong coffee
                       1 T brown sugar
                       1 jigger Irish Whiskey
                       Heavy whipped cream
Pour piping hot coffee into warmed glass until 3/4 full
Add brown sugar and stir until completely dissolved.
Blend in whiskey and top with whipped cream.

Other tasty foods are -
  • slow cooker corned beef and cabbage
  • lamb stew
  • shepherd's pie
  • soda bread

Irish tales of enchantment involve the Leprechaun - a mischievous fairy creature clad in emerald green clothing, who when not playing tricks on others is busy making shoes.  The Leprechaun is said to have a pot of gold hidden at the end of a rainbow, and if ever captured by a human has magical powers to grant three wishes in exchange for release.

Most importantly - don't forget to drink a special stout brew of roasted barley, female hops, water of St. James Wells and Guinness yeast -

Enjoy the opportunity to share the blessings bestowed upon you, your family and friends.  Celebrate your faith and life itself!!!!

Worry and Anxety

Worry – concern, apprehension, unease, FEAR

Anxiety – fretfulness, angst, nervousness, FEAR

FEAR is an emotion that protects us from perceived threats in our surroundings.

I don’t know of anyone, myself included, who hasn’t been confronted with FEAR.  There is the fear of:

1.       Failure – rules actions and decisions to avoid

2.       Death – the unknown

3.       Rejection – social acceptance

4.       Ridicule – negative criticism

5.       Loneliness – emptiness or absence of interaction with another human being

6.       Misery – extreme poverty

7.       Disappointment – others and self

8.       Pain – an unpleasant sensation

9.       Unknown – not in control of situation

10.   Freedom – right to make own choices

Each one of us makes a conscientious decision as to how we face our individual fears.  Rather than reaching for a medicine to mask my emotions, I choose to rely on the greatest Healer - my faith, and become:

F – Face my fear head-on

E – Erase the negative imprints in my brain

A – Allow change

R – Relax

L – Listen to my core intuition=values

E – End feuds in my relationships

S – Selective in what I choose to pursue

S – Self-esteem = confidence in my abilities and talents

The Lord is my light and my salvation--whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

Believing in Christ does not guarantee a journey free of trials and tribulations.  Believing in Christ does guarantee a journey free of worry, anxiety = FEAR.  Put your trust in God, putting your ego aside, to live in each and every moment.

 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27)

The Anchor Holds

I have journeyed,
Through the long, dark night;
Out on the open sea.
By faith alone,
Sight unknown;
And yet his eyes were watching me.

The anchor holds,
Though the ship is battered.
The anchor holds,
Though the sails are torn.
I have fallen on my knees,
As I faced the raging seas;
The anchor holds,
In spite of the storm.

I've had visions,
And I've had dreams;
I've even held them in my hand.
But I never knew,
They would slip right through;
Like they were only grains of sand.

The anchor holds,
Though the ship is battered.
The anchor holds,
Though the sails are torn.
I have fallen on my knees,
As I faced the raging seas;
The anchor holds,
In spite of the storm.

I have been young,
But I am older now.
And there has been beauty,
These eyes have seen.
But it was in the night,
Through the storms of my life;
Oh, that's where God proved his love to me.

The anchor holds,
Though the ship is battered.
The anchor holds,
Though the sails are torn.
I have fallen on my knees,
As I faced the raging seas;
The anchor holds,
In spite of the storm.

I have fallen on my knees,
As I faced the raging seas;
The anchor holds,
In spite of the storm.

MARCHING ONWARD

Today is the First day of March! Where I live, we are under a Winter Storm Warning as March enters like a 'Lion'.  March = last month of the first quarter in the financial world; March Madness in the KU basketball world; St. Patrick's Day for the Irish; Mardi Gras - 'Fat Tuesday' last night of eating rich fatty foods before ritual fasting of Lent; Ash Wednesday the beginning of Lenten season in the religious sector; and Spring Equinox- the season of hope and renewal!!

There is natural hope:
  • an expectation of something good or desirable
  • obtaining something welcomed
  • place confidence or trust
Natural hope may or may not have a foundation and may only exist as an expression or feeling.  Natural hope is based on the natural with no absolute guarantee.

Then there is biblical hope:
  • possibility based on scriptural promises
  • firm assurance regarding things that are unclear or unknown
  • an enduring virtue

Biblical hope is based on the fulfillment of biblical promises and is rooted in faith. It also produces joy and peace through the power of the Spirit.  Biblical hope is the confidence that what God has done for us in the past guarantees our participation in the future.  Hope gives one the confidence to live in the present and to face the future with courage.  In my own personal life, hope has sustained me when faced with medical issues, financial issues, loss of loved ones, loss of job and loss of love.

The present is a 'gift' and the future is the 'unknown'.  Go and March into the future, expecting JOY!!
